Dough Pizzeria Napoletana

Dough Pizzeria Napoletana uses farm-fresh, quality ingredients and Neapolitan techniques. It has two wood-burning ovens, the Il Cuore and the Scintilla. The pizzas are baked at over 900 degrees in just 90 seconds. The Pizza Americana has tomato sauce, house-made mozzarella cheese, house-made sausage, roasted mushrooms, Ezzo’s cupping pepperoni, and Locatelli pecorino Romano. Many other pizzas are available, including a featured pizza of the day.

For dessert, you can try tiramisu or Nutella torta, a rich chocolate mousse with a chocolate cookie crust, dark chocolate shavings, and espresso anglaise with house-made vanilla bean whipped cream. You can also enjoy espresso, cappuccino, macchiato, or a latte made with Kimbo coffee from Naples, Italy.

• Location: There are locations at 6989 Blanco Road and 518 S. Alamo St. in San Antonio. There’s also one at WillowBend Market at 5960 W. Parker Road, #286, Plano.
• Hours: The San Antonio locations are open 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. You can visit the Plano location from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Il Forno

Il Forno has a brick pizza oven, and it uses vegetables bought from local farmers. Local wines and beer are available, and there are indoor and outdoor dining areas. The Things Found Underground pizza has preserved lemon, garlic, potatoes, red onions, spring onions, fontina cheese, and leeks. The Milano comes with pecans, garlic, gorgonzola, ricotta, cranberries, Swiss chard, and red onions. All of the pizzas are 12 inches with thin crusts, and they’re perfect for sharing.

You can also try pork meatballs with flatbread, pesto potatoes with goat cheese, or a house salad. There’s an extensive beer and wine list, and chef Jason Garcia cures meats and pickles vegetables in-house. Il Forno also grows herbs in a community garden outside. You can attend a pizza-making class on the second Wednesday of every other month.

Fralo’s

Fralo’s Pizza is only about 20 minutes from downtown San Antonio. It often has live music, and the outdoor tables offer splendid views of the stars after dark. Pets are welcome, and this place has excellent craft beer. You can start with fried calamari, mozzarella cheese sticks with marinara sauce, or roasted Brussels sprouts with pickled red onions, roasted garlic aioli, shaved parmesan cheese, pistachio, and sweet, spicy cider.

Gluten-free pizza crusts are available, and the sampler pizza can have up to four assorted flavors. The Nutty Chicken comes with pine nuts, garlic chicken, pesto, and spinach. You’ll get spinach, mushroom, zucchini, red onions, bell peppers, black olives, and tomato sauce on the Virginia. The BBQ pizza has venison with a sweet sauce, red onions, and cilantro. Fralo’s also has excellent spaghetti and meatballs. You can try the New York cheesecake with chocolate sauce or tiramisu for dessert.

Big Lou’s Pizza

At Big Lou’s Pizza, you can enjoy oversized, 42-inch pizzas that can feed a crowd. Smaller pizzas are available as well. This place uses fresh vegetables and other ingredients, and the sauces are made in-house. The pizzas are amazing and award-winning. Big Lou’s Hot & Spicy Deluxe pizza has hot honey, crushed red peppers, ricotta cheese, salami, pepperoni, provolone cheese, and mozzarella cheese. The Garlic Parmesan pizza comes with garlic parmesan sauce, pepperoni, mozzarella, red onion, chicken, spinach, and tomatoes.

The BBQ Brisket or Chicken pizza comes with smoked brisket, cheddar cheese, and house-made barbecue sauce. You can also try calzones, wings, wraps, sandwiches, or salads. Other options include 10-layer meat or cheese lasagna, fettuccine Alfredo, or chicken Alfredo lasagna. Big Lou’s Pizza opened in 2000, and it’s a popular place for birthdays and other special occasions.

• Hours: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 9 p.m. on Sunday.

Trilogy Pizza

Trilogy Pizza has been open since 2004, and it gets its name from its three pizza options. You can choose New York-style thin crust, California wheat crust, or deep-dish pizza. Appetizers include garlic pepperoni knots, house-made bread with French goat cheese and marinara sauce, and beef and pork meatballs with marinara sauce. The Texan pizza comes with Canadian bacon, pepperoni, and Italian sausage.

The San Antonio Special has Mexican spices, jalapenos, marinara, beef, mozzarella, onions, and tomatoes. With the Spinach Pie, you’ll get marinara, mozzarella, red onions, spinach, bacon, and mushrooms. The Pollo Bianco has oven-roasted chicken, fresh garlic, tomatoes, bacon, mozzarella, parmesan cheese, and garlic-infused olive oil. You can also choose a pizza with a cauliflower crust that’s gluten-free and vegan. There’s an extensive selection of beer and wine, and delivery is available.
